Navigating eCommerce career transitions

I’ve recently been thinking about how many of us are shifting roles within the eCommerce space, especially as customer expectations evolve. Last year, I made a switch from a traditional retail role to leading customer experience for an online brand. It was daunting at first, but focusing on empathy and innovation has made a world of difference. How has everyone else positioned themselves during these changes?

It’s interesting to hear how you prioritized empathy in your customer experience role. When I made a similar switch, I found that leveraging data analytics really helped me understand customer behavior better, even though it felt overwhelming at first. I wish I’d had a clearer roadmap on tools like Google Analytics to tackle those insights right away.

I totally get that! When I switched to digital marketing, I found storytelling really connected with customers, like giving them a cozy seat by a fire instead of a cold sales pitch. Have you tried weaving narratives into your customer interactions, @s_gregory?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌

I can totally relate to that shift! When I moved from in-store sales to an eCommerce role, I found using customer feedback loops really helped hone in on empathy. Gathering insights directly from customers made a huge difference in shaping our experience. I sometimes wonder if too much emphasis on innovation can distract us from just listening to what customers want — what do you think?

I’ve found that framing our initiatives around customer stories can build stronger connections. As @ksimmons89 said, ‘too much emphasis on innovation can distract us from just listening to what customers want’ — it’s about balance, right? How do you all keep that customer focus alive?
